Schools on the West Coast, including Cal, pivoted to fielding rugby teams, and traditions like the Big Game carried over to rugby. Even after schools readopted football, Cal rugby stayed a jewel of Golden Bears athletics – since the national championship era began in 1980, Cal has won 33 times.
