Led by Coach Bill McCartney and All-American running back Eric Bieniemy, the No. 2 Colorado Buffaloes defeated No. 5 Notre Dame at the Orange Bowl in Miami to claim the program’s only national championship in 1990. That season highlighted a golden era of Colorado football and gave the Buffaloes a chance to avenge their loss to Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl just a year earlier. Additional wins over ranked Nebraska, Washington, Texas, and Oklahoma squads earned them the most votes for No. 1 in nearly every poll for the 1990 season.
