The Charlotte 49ers don't have any direct ties to the California Gold Rush, but the university's tenacity in the wake of adversity inspired the student body's mascot choice in 1961. In 1949, Bonnie Ethel Cone helped save the Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina from closure, which inspired "'49er spirit" throughout the newly named Charlotte College. Of course, it helps that the Charlotte campus is located near the site of the first gold discovery in the U.S., too.
