In what became known as the “Duel in the Desert,” No. Penn State defeated No. 1 Miami, 14-10, in the Fiesta Bowl on January 2, 1987 in Tempe to win the 1986 National Championship. More than 70 million people watched the Nittany Lions defense wear down Miami and Heisman winner Vinny Testaverde in a primetime matchup on NBC, breaking the record for a college football telecast.
