After two less-than-stellar seasons in Houston, then-Congressman Jim Gardner and the Southern Sports Corporation purchased the Mavericks, and, for the start of the 1969 season, moved them to North Carolina. Branded a "regional team," hoping to entertain basketball lovers in all the major metro areas of the state, the Cougars played the majority of their games in Greensboro.
