The San Diego Conquistadors are, technically speaking, the only expansion team in ABA history (no, relocations of existing teams don't count). Founded in 1972, the Q's, as they were affectionately known, used a real-life reference for their mascot illustration--their mascot is Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the Portuguese explorer who landed in what's now known as the San Diego Bay.
