Cal’s rugby history dates back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, when American football became increasingly unsafe. Schools on the West Coast, including Cal, pivoted to fielding rugby teams, and traditions like the Big Game carried over to rugby. Even after schools readopted football, Cal rugby stayed a jewel of Golden Bears athletics – since the national championship era began in 1980, Cal has won 33 times.
