Every year, Jackson State plays its rivalry game against Alcorn State, in a game nicknamed the Soul Bowl. The name has been around since roughly the late 1970’s, just after Jackson State won the contest in four consecutive years from 1971 through 1974. Coincidentally, those consecutive victories line up with legendary running back Walter Payton’s four years as a Tiger.
