Prior to being known as the Griz (or the Lady Griz, in the case of the women's basketball team), the Montana Grizzlies were simply known as the Bears. Like other universities with bear mascots, Montana tried bringing live bears to games throughout the early 20th century. Also like other universities with bear mascots, the practice was difficult to sustain and hard on the cubs. One bear even successfully ran away -- there might be a family of true Montana Grizzlies out there somewhere.
Each corduroy hat is adjustable, and size ranges from cap sizes 7 to 7 3/4 (56 to 62 cm). Hats are 8cm from the top of the bill to the point of the crown.
