When Coastal Carolina was trying to find a mascot that would relate them to their then-sister school, USC, the Chanticleer became a clear favorite. The Chanticleer, modeled after the rooster from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began as a relative to the South Carolina Gamecock, until the university became an independent school in the '90s. By 2002, the Chanticleer found an identity all its own, just as Coastal had.
