Houston Cougars men’s basketball has long had success on the court, but their Phi Slama Jama teams from 1982-84 flew as high as NASA rockets. Head coach Guy Lewis encouraged a high-flying style uncharacteristic of “traditional” teams, such as John Wooden’s UCLA teams that dominated the decade prior; Lewis’ players watched the ABA and slam-dunking stars like Julius Erving, and modeled their play accordingly. Phi Slama Jama reached cosmic heights through the early ‘80s, and their legend only grew as Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon built incredible careers in the NBA.
