From 1972 to 1974, Louisiana Tech football won three consecutive national championships, each in unique ways. In 1972, the undefeated Bulldogs became NCAA College Division champions after defeating Tennessee Tech 35-0 in the Grantland Rice Bowl. After the College Division split in 1973, LA Tech won the Division II playoffs, with a 12-1 record to boot. Finally, the Bulldogs earned the 1974 UPI national title, which the program claimed prior to the start of the 1974 playoffs.
