The Atlanta Constitution newspaper first used the term “Volunteers” in 1902 to describe the UT football team after a win against Georgia Tech, but the nickname goes much deeper. Tennessee’s history as the “Volunteer State” began with the War of 1812 when more than 1,500 soldiers joined Andrew Jackson to fight for the US in the Battle of New Orleans. Davy Crockett and several hundred other Tenneseeans traveled to Texas to help them fight for their independence in 1836. President James K. Polk (from Tennessee) asked for 2,600 volunteers from the US during the Mexican-American war in 1846. 30,000 men from the state of Tennessee alone answered the call, forever cementing them as the “Volunteer State.”
