McAllen, Texas is known as "the City of Palms," and hosted the aptly named Palm Bowl national championship game from 1978 through 1985. During the 1981 Palm Bowl, the first season McAllen hosted the DII national championship game, in which North Dakota State and Southwest Texas State vied for the title. The Bobcats won by a commanding 45-13 score.
