The 66th running of the Indianapolis 500 is remembered for tragedy, drama, and triumph in equal measure. Gordon Smiley passed tragically during a crash in time trials, casting a heartbreaking cloud over race festivities. While the rest of qualifying and Carb Day proceeded uneventfully, the 500 itself began with a controversial, multi-car crash between Kevin Cogan, Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Roger Mears, Bobby Rahal, and Dale Whittington. The race action didn't stop there, as Gordon Johncock beat Rick Mears to win the race by a slim, 0.16-second margin.
