While the Pipers' 1968 ABA championship added them to the pantheon of Pittsburgh pro sports, there was one way the team notably broke the city mold. The Pipers did not wear the city's signature black and yellow color scheme (something the Pittsburgh Penguins adopted at their founding in 1967, the same year as the Pipers). After the team left for a year and returned as the Pittsburgh Condors, they still did not adopt the unified color scheme that is now synonymous with Yinzer pride.
