The Crimson Tide’s elephant connection dates back to 1930, when sportswriter Everett Strupper wrote glowingly about Wallace Wade’s eventual National Champions he saw play that year. “At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble…,” Strupper wrote. “Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, ‘Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,” and out stamped this Alabama varsity.” The metaphor stuck.
