Before moving to Division I, Arkansas State football won their third consecutive Southland Conference title and a DII national championship in 1970. While the final coaches’ poll strongly favored A-State, the press only put them ahead narrowly over Montana. If there was any doubt they earned the title, ASU ended up winning their bowl game, while Montana lost theirs.
