1954 was a special year for the Cincinnati Bearcats baseball program. It was the first year at the helm for Ed Jucker, who would lead the team to the NCAA tournament in 1956 and win the MVC title in 1958, both firsts for the Bearcats (before leading the basketball team to national titles in 1961 and 1962). It was also the first and only year that legendary Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax joined the team. He was a multi-sport athlete who was on scholarship with the basketball team in 1953 before moving over to the mound and leading the Bearcats’ pitching staff in strikeouts in 1954.
