In the 1980s and 1990s, Delta State students decided on a collective whim that the official Statesman mascot didn’t represent the proper spirit of the school. Rather than selecting a more serious mascot, the students had a sense of humor about their preferred school symbol; they selected the Fighting Okra “because okra is tough, green, and prickly.” He entered the mainstream in the 2000s, after Delta State created an official marketing campaign around him, as well as his feature on the show Good Eats.
