The Blue Devils’ name isn’t actually demonic – they’re named for a French WWI military unit called the Chasseurs Alpins, more famously known as les diables bleus (“the blue devils”). Though some were hesitant to adopt “Blue Devils” at first, the nickname gained steam around 1922. Since then, though, their mascot and logo have fully leaned into the classic devil look.
