50 years ago, Florida State hired Bobby Bowden as its head football coach. Bowden was a rising name in coaching circles, after successful stints in position coaching roles across the South (including, briefly, at Florida State, where he coached wide receivers) and, most recently, as the offensive coordinator at West Virginia. That same season, Florida State debuted its iconic spear helmets on the football field--meaning that two pillars of Florida State football culture debuted in 1976. This "Fear the Spear" tee celebrates that combined history, and the impact Bobby Bowden and the spear iconography have on college football.
