In the 1980s, human mascots replaced live bulldogs at Gonzaga. Student Mike Griffin wore a cape and called himself “Captain Zag” from 1980-82. A few students kept the tradition going until 1985, when the first human bulldog mascot—soon known as “Spike”—made an appearance.
