100 years ago, Illinois State changed mascots from the "Fighting Teachers" to something that matched their cardinal and white colors. They initially chose the cardinal bird, but to avoid confusion with the St. Louis Cardinals, went by the Redbirds instead. This "thumbs-up" Redbird, featured on this vintage dad hat, was the first standardized ISU logo, setting the foundation for the modern mascot's look.
