While James Madison University’s nickname, the Dukes, sounds rooted in royalty, the school took the nickname after the former university president Samuel Page Duke. JMU adopted the nickname in 1947, two years before Duke retired from his presidency. Nearly 30 years later, the bulldog made his first appearance as the official “Duke Dog” breed.
