Michigan's winged helmets were first introduced in 1938, replacing simple black helmets. Fritz Crisler brought the helmet design with him from his previous team, Princeton. The bright maize pattern of the wing, according to Crisler, was thought to help the quarterback see his receiver, as football began to incorporate the forward pass.
