At the entrance of Apogee Stadium, you’ll find a brass eagle named Spiriki standing ready to root on the Mean Green. Sculpted by Kent Ullberg, the Geezles, a social fraternity at UNT from roughly the 1920’s through the ‘70s, commissioned the piece to serve as a lasting contribution to the university. His unique name comes from a fraternity greeting that loosely resembled the word “spirit” mixed with an eagle’s cry. Before each game, players give Spiriki a quick pat as a pledge to fight for the Mean Green.
