Since Ohio State’s first idea of a live buck mascot wasn’t the safest idea, the Ohio State athletic council instead chose to personify the Buckeye mascot as a cartoon tree nut. The live mascot, eventually named Brutus in a naming contest, was originally made out of papier-mâché. The papier-mâché was also not ideal for a mascot, and was soon replaced with a lighter, fiberglass frame.
