Back before the Big Ten Championship game, Ohio State split the 1996 conference title with the Northwestern Wildcats, with both teams going 7-1 on the year. The Buckeyes, however, received the coveted bid to the 1997 Rose Bowl, and defeated Arizona State, 20-17.
