Ole Miss sought a nickname and mascot in 1929, and opened up a naming contest through the student newspaper, The Mississippian. The judging committee unanimously selected the Flood, based on the great Mississippi Valley flood of 1927. Alum Dick McCool, Jr., suggested the name because a flood could “in due time, course, and season, drown out the whole, blooming SIC menagerie,” referring to the many animal mascots of the conference now known as the SEC; plus, he reasoned, “you can sometimes stem the tide… but, as yet, none have been able to successfully control the flood.”
