Early Oregon athletics teams were known as the Webfoots. The nickname is tied into Oregon’s history; it possibly originated from the Massachusetts “Webfoot” Revolutionary War heroes that settled the Willamette Valley, or from Californians who likened Oregonian settlers to “webfoots” because of Oregon’s frequent rain. Since Ducks have webbed feet, many began to associate the Oregon Webfoots with ducks, and when a duck named Puddles became the Webfoots’ live mascot in the 1920’s, the shorter “Ducks” nickname popped up.
