In 1970, UNC Charlotte officially opened Belk Gymnasium, where the team saw incredible success (including three consecutive seasons where they were undefeated at home). As the men's basketball team's star was on the rise, the modest 3,000-seat "Mine Shaft" could no longer accommodate 49ers fans; the team moved its conference home games to the original Charlotte Coliseum in 1976.
