After a tough 1-2 start to the season, San José State rebounded for the rest of their stellar 1986 season. Going undefeated after their loss to Stanford, the Spartans won out the rest of the year, and notched a win over a ranked opponent, No. 19 Fresno. The PCAA champions would then head to the California Bowl for a decisive win over Miami.
