One of the most unique mascots out there, the Billiken, or the “God of Things as They Ought to Be,” has its roots in the early 1900s. Created by Florence Pratz, the good luck charm quickly became a popular trinket and gift. Legend has it that John Bender, the head football coach at SLU at the time, resembled the elvin creature, and his team began to be known as Bender’s Billikens. The name stuck, and over 100 years later, the Billikens continue to rely on their namesake’s good luck. Celebrate this long history with this Billiken illustration from 1958 on one of the softest tees you’ll ever own.
