Rebounding from a loss to Notre Dame in the national semifinals the previous season, legendary coach Geno Auriemma led one of the best UConn teams of all-time to a perfect season in 2002. Regarded as perhaps the greatest starting lineup in women's college basketball history, seniors Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Asjha Jones, and Tamika Williams teamed up with sophomore Diana Taurasi to claim the program’s third national championship in front of a record-breaking crowd at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Their 82-70 win over Oklahoma for the title would become the highest rated college basketball game to air on ESPN (men’s or women’s), and UConn’s 39-0 record would tie the 1998 Tennessee Lady Vols for best record by a Division I women’s basketball team.
