Illustrations of the Fighting Seahawk first surfaced around 1980, paired with a costumed mascot right around the same time. Over time, he gained signature flourishes to distinguish both him and UNCW from other mascots or rival programs, including the basketball jersey he’s seen in here in this vintage sketch recreation. A student named him “Sammy C. Hawk” in a naming contest in 2004.
