UTEP has used the “Miners” nickname since the university’s founding, but had difficulty settling on a mascot until Pete came about in the ‘70s. Originally, the Miners had a burro mascot named Clyde, accompanied by a student dressed as a prospector. After replacing Clyde with another burro, Henry, the Miners tried an unpopular precursor to Paydirt Pete named “Sweet Pete.” Here, we’re celebrating the 1990’s vintage Paydirt Pete and UTEP’s fight song, “Miners Fight.”
