In 1923, Oklahoma A&M was looking to name a new mascot. It wasn't long until a few students decided that Frank B. Eaton would be the perfect inspiration- a true cowboy, Eaton had earned the nickname Pistol Pete after winning a calvary contest at Fort Gibson. The school officially adopted Pistol Pete as its mascot in 1958, and the rest is history. Brought to you in partnership with Oklahoma State's Old Central Collection.
