Unofficially known as the Fighting Methodists or Wesleyans until 1912, USC would adopt a new nickname after a fateful track and field meet against Stanford University. In an attempt to come from behind after losing many of the early events that day, LA Times sportswriter Owen Bird would say that USC "fought on like the Trojans of antiquity." University president George F. Bovard officially approved the name, and many new Trojan traditions arose for the underdogs from Southern California.
