We found a version of this vintage logo on old Syracuse memorabilia that roughly dates back to the early days of Otto the Orange. Prior to Otto’s debut, the university used a Native American caricature mascot that Syracuse students successfully petitioned the school to discontinue in 1977. The so-called “Saltine Warrior” was replaced by a wildly unpopular gladiator for a year before Syracuse created – and then embraced – what they called “an Orange with appeal.”
