As a way to involve the student body and inject energy into the football program, Texas A&M head coach Jackie Sherrill introduced a new concept in 1983. The 12th Man Kickoff Team, made entirely of walk-ons (with the exception of the scholarship kicker), would cover kickoffs for home games and the final road game of the season. Playing with a reckless abandon and love of their school, the players made his idea a huge success. Over the next five seasons, the 12th Man Kickoff Team led the country in covering kickoffs twice—never finishing out of the top 5— and helped the Aggies to three straight Southwest Conference titles and two Cotton Bowl victories, waving their famous white towels every time they ran out on the field.
