Before they were Hokies, they were Gobblers. Before they were VT, they were VPI. The nickname "Gobblers" first originated from football Coach Branch Bocock in 1909. In 1971, the school appended "Fightin'" to "Gobblers". In 1981, Football Coach and AD Bill Dooley changed the nickname officially to "Hokie". In the same vein, Virginia Tech - officially named Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University - was known as VPI until 1969, when the switch was made to Virginia Tech. Brought to you in partnership with College Vault.
