The West Virginia Legislature created the Agricultural College of West Virginia in 1867 under the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act. It was renamed West Virginia University the following year, and it was written in the local newspaper that “a place more eligible for the quiet and successful pursuit of science and literature is nowhere to be found.” The student newspaper was founded in 1887, the first football team started playing in 1891, and the basketball team was formed in 1903. Today, 22,000 undergraduate students can be found on the three sub-campuses in Morgantown.
