After the sudden dismissal of Bill Frieder (upon him accepting the head coaching job at ASU), Steve Fisher was named interim coach of Michigan men’s basketball right before the start of the 1989 tournament. Led by Glen Rice, who scored a tournament record 184 points in six games, the Wolverines won their only basketball national championship to date in an overtime thriller against Seton Hall.
