Herky the Hawk still looks great for being over 70 years old. Journalism instructor Dick Spencer first drew up the sporty little guy in 1948, and the university held a statewide contest to name him. A UI alumnus named John Franklin suggested “Herky” as a reference to the Greek god Hercules.
