Mighty Mizzou began its most prominent era of football with a statement season in 1960, culminating in a 1961 Orange Bowl victory against Navy. While the Tigers were strong on both sides of the ball, they were especially stout on defense, holding eight of their eleven opponents to one score. Missouri only lost to Kansas that year, but the Jayhawks were forced to forfeit the win; still, the loss in the Border War sunk the Tigers’ chances to win the national title (though we think Mizzou had a right to claim it if they wanted to).
