In 1971, the Southwest Conference restricted travel for live animal mascots to away games, meaning Texas Tech would be away from home without the Masked Rider. Because of this, Jim Gaspard, a member of the Saddle Tramps spirit group, brought Dirk West’s renditions of Raider Red to life so the Red Raiders would have an away game mascot.
